Vendor comparisons at the Provider core layer

June 2005 -- Hinx gain valuable experience with Avici, Cisco and Juniper core routers testing for a major UK Service Provider.

The Cisco CRS-1 has some competition with the Juniper T640 and the uniquely modular Avici platform.  Hinx carried out vendor testing on all aspects of the core routers, testing ISIS scalability, MPLS forwarding, security, overall performance, RSVP-TE setup rates, as well as helping to develop provisioning tools for a large "full mesh" of RSVP tunnels across the Provider core.

Paul Hine, Managing Director at Hinx said, "Our independence was key in providing an objective view of the vendors' equipment.

  • Visiting Avici in Boston was a great experience, getting to meet the folks that developed the router and seeing how the toroidal mesh allows it to scale as SPs bring in new capacity.
  • The Cisco CRS-1 is a seriously capable platform, with no obvious bottlenecks in the system.  Testing with 120Gbps throughput on 10G cards showed perfect handling of the desired 5-level QoS model.
  • Juniper's T640 certainly looks the part, and the carry-over of modules from the larger M-series definately score points here.

The outcome is as yet unreleased, but the testing revealed strengths and weaknesses in all parties, often these were surprising.  It was particularly good to see the support functions in action as we pushed the boundaries of the equipment's hardware and software capabilities."
